Got myself some cacti a few months ago - they make pleasant enough plants, and require minimal care, so they're perfect for me Wasn't expecting anything from them this year, what with them being young plants and having been rendered dormant for transport - I thought they'd maybe grow a little. Imagine my surprise, then, when one of them grew two flowers - twice! Didn't get any pics the first time round, but a friend wanted to see this time, since she'd never seen a cactus in flower before - so what the hell, may as well share here too That's a rebutia fiebrigii (previously known as rebutia muscula), if anyone cares

I don't know why, but prior to taking a proper interest in them, I never really imagined cacti having flowers. As it turns out, they have some of the most impressive flowers I've ever seen! (Not necessarily the above, but some breeds are absolute stunners)

Really striking colour, isn't it? It opens and closes through the course of the day too; right now the petals are half-folded in. That was one point I didn't know about them; you learn something every day! ;D

All you need is some black leaves inbetween the orange ones and it would be perfect! 'Tis truly a lovely colour though! Really vibrant!

The collection's slowly growing... The cacti are all settled and dormant for winter right now, but even asleep, some of them are pretty impressive (Click image to open full-size

Oh I know - I love the spines on some of them ;D So far, though, the worst one's actually been the rather innocent-looking opuntia - the flat pad thing at the back. Those little spots on it are actually clusters of 20+ spines, which I discovered come away from the plant very easily but dislodge from hands with great difficulty - and was still discovering this three hours on Apparently, opuntia fruits (prickly pears) and the pads themselves are edible - I look forward to exacting revenge on the little bastard

...but not too fat... apparently the vegetable part gets very pithy if you leave it to grow too large...

They don't scream or run away... they will if they see you dressed in your cowboy hat & chaps with a bit of morning wood. ;D

Which type is/was it? Any idea how? I can point you to a couple of good sites if you do decide to go for a replacement; both tried and trusted suppliers
