Serpico was one cool hippy coppper, Lucas! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) Yeah well you could call him that, just like David Prutton apart from the copper bit. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Al Pachino liked his true stories back in the early 70s, Dog Day Afternoon a couple of years later was based on a true story too wasn't it. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) And it's still his best film outside 'The Godather' series. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

THE COUNTERFEITERSA film based on the true story of Jewish prisoners in the Concentration camps of World War 2, who were forced to counterfiet English and American money to aid the German war effort. Based arround a central character 'Salomon Sorowitz', a professional forger, a criminal and a chancer, it not only tries to portray the horror of concentration camps, but also the moral struggle that the 'counterfeiters' had to endure. They were given nice lodgings, food, water and a cosy life while over the fence thousands of their brothers, sisters, wives and children were being massacred. It makes you both a critical observer of moral decisions and unexpectedly complicit in them. It leaves you feeling confused, perhaps angry. It makes you grin, at times, and secretly wish the counterfeiters success, then makes you feel wrong for grinning and for wishing, which is as it should be. In concentration camps and in life, there are few good, healthy, clean decisions. No one dies unsullied. In short, this is a movie that forces moral decisions on you and shows you their consequences. Brilliantly done!! It was a really enjoyable, moving and powerful film that maintained your full attention throughout, with the lead performances of superb quality. Well worth a watch, even though it is subtitled (see Trav...i watched a subtitled film again) 8.7 out of 10 ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Saw another good war film last night called female agents.....only the French could have undercover women looking like Vogue models! ;D

Straw Dogs
A really quite violent and disturbing tale of small village life, featuring Dustin Hoffman as the mild mannered school teacher who is pushed too far when his wife is raped and his property is attacked by local inbreds.
A tad too long and very, very graphic in parts this is still essentially a decent claustrophobic thriller.
I won't be rushing to watch it again any time soon though.
6.5/10

The House Bunny
Got dragged to see this by two girl friends of mine last weekend, and I'll be fair - it's not all that bad.
The plot didn't exactly fill me with optimism, I must admit - a playboy bunny is kicked out of the mansion for being too old (27), and finds herself on the streets. She ends up taking a live-in job as the house-mother of a sorority at a college, which is predictably full of the weird, unattractive girls. I'm sure you can guess how the rest of the story goes without further prompting - she makes them beautiful and popular, she finds love, they turn on her, she screws up the relationship, but everything works out in the end.
Given Hollywood's habit over the last few years of churning out endless crap teen films, I wasn't exactly brimming with confidence - however, I have noted of late that the industry has started getting its act together, so I allowed myself a small glimmer of hope. "It might not be so bad."
And it wasn't.
It's not going to win any awards, and it's not going to be critically acclaimed. It was pretty entertaining, though - I found myself chuckling at a good number of the jokes ("Maybe he's the kind of guy who likes to have a conversation before getting into a relationship?" "Oh God, you mean he's gay?!"), and the sweet/soppy moments were actually pulled off pretty well. The girls with me confessed to getting teary-eyed at certain bits, and I must admit I allowed myself a smile at the same parts too.
Had this been made 2 years ago, it would've been dire, but I came away having enjoyed it. It's definitely one for the girls, but any guys being dragged along should enjoy themselves too, unless they're a die-hard Michael Bay fanatic.
I can't give it any higher than 6.5/10 because the plot was so weak and predictable, but it gets a 7/10 for enjoyment value on my part.

How much does Anna Faris reveal Neko is the question most teenage boys would be asking.

Boo ! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Wonder how much longer she can go on playing these ditzy roles ? With her bank balance I don't think she'd much care I guess.

Good job I still have the Word doc on file! Well if you fancy childish, charming and animated then 'My Neighbour Totoro', it brightens any mood! If you want something intellectually stimulating and wordy then 'Sophie Scholl', it's set during the war, but is a ideological piece. If you want laugh your ass off at severely unPC stuff and bestiality then 'Clerks II'. Poetic and beautiful, then 'Cinema Paradiso'. Mad and Japanese and Lord Of The Flies-esque, then 'Battle Royale'. Or a smart teen comedy with the astoundingly good Ellen Paige, then 'Juno'. Or maybe one of the others.... ;D

Super Size Me
US Documentary maker Morgan Spurlock embarks on a 30 day McDonald's binge in order to show that it causes detrimental health effects.
I found this quite enjoyable if a little prone to hyperbole and falls into the trap of overly one sided reporting. 30 days on any sort of monotone diet is bound to have some sort of effect on you. Still, it raises many interesting and shocking facts and Spurlock comes across as a likeable chap.
I don't eat fast food anyway, and I'm not sure that if I was as addicted as some of the people he meets in this documentary that it would have much effect.
7/10

And I watched Rambo III the other night. Maybe it's the passage of time coupled with the truly vile Rambo 4 but this doesn't seem as crass as it perhaps should be. A rather guilty 90 minutes, but it's no 'First Blood'...
