I'm not wanting to pre-judge before seeing the film, but I think I can safely say that fact has to be the most outrageously over the top, stupid, hype-induced bit of film based hysteria in recent history! i beg your pardon? Do you require lelman's terms? ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I saw it and it was good, hell maybe even great.......but it certainly aint The Godfather!!

Okay, after I've heard all the good reviews about it, I'm gonna throw a wrench into the works with this review from the Redditch Standard. I confess to only having seen the original film (unless you count the tv series with Adam West when it was on Channel 4 years ago) and even that only once but frankly, I found it hard to do anything other than grimace after the first two sentences of this pretty damning review.
Humourless cape proves no caper
In 2005, in these very pages, I accused Christopher Nolan of draining all the fun out of the Batman franchise, and now we have a Batman movie in which the Joker is played by a dead man - note statement of grimacing
Of course, Heath Ledger's passing was never likely to impede The Dark Knight's release - not while tehre was a huge amount of money riding on the film.
Newspaper reports have stressed the vast sums - $150 million in its opening weekend, $300 million shortly after - this follow-up to Batman begins has so far accrued.
For Nolan and his producers have brough Batman into the corporate era wholesale - more fully, in fact, that Tim Burton's Batman blockbusters, with their now innocent-seeming tie-in T-shirts and baseball caps could ever have imagined.
The Dark Knight's very plot hinges on the transportation and disposal of money.
Ledger's Joker is introduced robbing a Mob-controlled bank, and later sets fire to his ill-gotten gains - just because he, and the film, can afford to. After Batman Begins, this is Batman Blings.
Nolan can afford to bring in new blood, much of it welcome.
Gyllenhaal, loose-limbed in power trousers, is onviously a sexier presence than the first film's Katie Holmes, and Eckhart is suitably slick as Gotham DA Harvey Dent, though we all know he'll have to work through the same character as Tommy Lee Jones's Two-Face in Batman Forever.
But once again, in the humourless Bale, we're stuck with the least sympathetic Bruce Wayne in screen history; his Batman is an investment banker in a cape.
The playfulness that elevated the Burton Batmans has gone. Nolan's films are confused, joyless, and violent in a cold, anaesthetising way.
I'm assuming Warner Bros sent their own heavies round to the BBFC: in no other context would Dent's fire-damaged face pass at a 12A, and under no circumstances should young children be admitted.
If Batman Begins was a Batman for pedants, this is Batman for masochists. It's become the Amy Winehouse of movie franchises: drunk on its own mythology, all clogged arteries where there should be clear, straight, thrilling lines, and liable to keep plodding onwards, squandering considerable talents, while there are people paying to see it.
All involved are making themselves a lot of money, but - as Ledger's presence keeps reminding you, in the most morbid of ways - it's really doing nobody any good.
I personally found the opening comment with regards to heath Ledger grossly insensitive, but having not seen the film myself as of yet, can't pass any judgement on the review. Thoughts anyone?

Sounds like a hopelessly laughable attempt by a writer to get himself some attention!
He appears to be suggesting that he's too shallow and stupid to embrace any superhero film that actually carries some substance and emotional resonance. Maybe he should stick with disposable tat like the Fantastic Four flicks.
There's enough vacuous and disposable crap served up by the Hollywood studios to feed the brain dead, surely we should be encouraging more output like this and not senslessly criticising it. I must admit that I've found the relatively slightly disappointing showing of WALL-E at the box office quite depressing, the success of The Dark Knight thankfully suggests that there is an audience for more ambitious and intelligent films.
