Bloody ridiculous. They're striking over something that might happen, and are seeking assurances that no-one else in the country has - why the hell are they so special? No-one has cast-iron job security; it's not how capitalism works - welcome to the real world! But no, they inconvenience 2.7m commuters plus all the tourists, people passing through London, people whose trains run through London etc, all for the sake of 360 people whose jobs - at a failed company - might be affected. You know what everyone else does when they realise they're in a situation like that? They jump ship and find another job! (If I remember correctly, Billy did that very thing less than 12 months ago!) Or is the unwillingness to jump ship perhaps related to the easy work, good pay and enviable pension they're currently offered? £19k to blow a whistle and indicate 'red' or 'green' to the driver ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) It's worth noting that two of the three unions affected by the closure have accepted the assurances they've currently been offered too, so it's hardly like they're getting a raw deal. You can bet Thatcher wouldn't have let them carry on like this ![:-X](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png)

The RMT are particularly hardcore. I hope they don't do the second strike now, that'd be hugely annoying - but I don't blame them for protecting their members' interests, I just think they could make their point without it being three days. Still most of us aren't old enough to remember General Strikes - those were "more" than inconvenient... ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

Here in HK, the metal workers are on strike. Not surprising really as they get paid 70 quid a day - they want 80, but think about the conditions they work in - outside, in 30-35oC heat, no air con and working with metal.
We think we have it hard with working long hours and whatever, here they have no overtime pay, no privileges and they work ridiculous hours..

I don't blame them for protecting their members' interests I wouldn't either, normally, but I think firstly that their demands are beyond unreasonable, and secondly that their demands appeared to have been met before the strike. That said, hasn't Crow now said that their demands have been met? So wtf is the threatened second strike over?! ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

Yes well working on the tubes isn't a bundle of laughs but I will admit the drivers are paid well (other staff considerably less so).
