So...this is the time where we all drop our club alliegances and cheer on the same side to yet another pointless performance against some middle of the road team and then condemn them and slag them off until they score for their respective clubs the weekend after.
To be honest, i'm not sure many people really care right now about England but it is 2 games we really have to win to stay in touch for qualification. I can't believe McClaren is buttering it up like a point would be good enough v Israel...thats loser talk!
Can we do the job or will it be another underachievement again?
Here's hoping we do not fuck up. Dunno what the team will look like what with injuries in all but i say we go with this if possible...
Robbo
Richards Terry Ferdinand Carragher
Gerrard Hargreaves Lampard Lennon
Rooney Johnson
Over to you McClaren......

Richards probably won't play as he's carrying a calf strain so P. Neville and Carra are likely to start in the full back positions.

If he scores one more goal then he'll be the 2nd highest scoring keeper after Schmiechel ...I remember him scoring a header for Leeds in the 90th minute against Swindon to send us through in the cup ;D

To be bluntly honest, as much as I would love to see England do well, I'm expecting more of the footballing equivalent of inane drivel. I know full well that the squad should be better than the table says at the moment, but the fact is they just play like they don't care. I honestly believe a squad picked solely from the football league (i.e. not the Premiership) would at least put up more of a fight, even if they didn't win. It wouldn't be a limp, toothless surrender.
There's talk of McClaren not being able to get them motivated, but ffs, he shouldn't need to at that level! You're playing at the highest level any footballer in the world can dream of (i.e. for your country!) - what greater motivation do you want?
I'm honestly beginning to think that McClaren should forget about players like Crouch, Lampard, Downing and even Gerrard, and bring in people who'll give a flying fuck - look at Hargreaves and Richards, for instance. When the prima donnas look like they actually give a fuck, then play them.
I know he's injured this time, but right now I'm thinking even Beckham, with all his lack of running with the ball and poor corners, should get another chance in the next set of qualifiers; at least in the squad and probably on the bench as a way of changing the game. I bet he'd be willing to fight to keep his place!

Last Updated: Monday, 19 March 2007, 17:21 GMT E-mail this to a friend Printable version McClaren calls up striker Nugent David Nugent in action for Preston Nugent scored against Burnley on Saturday Preston striker David Nugent has been called up to replace injured Charlton forward Darren Bent for the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers.
If Nugent plays on Saturday he would become the first outfield player from outside the top flight to play for England since Michael Gray in 1999.
Nugent is the first Preston player to have been called into an England squad since winger Tom Finney was in 1958.
Earlier on Monday Aston Villa's Gareth Barry was also drafted into the squad.
Interview: England boss Steve McClaren Interview: England's goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence
Nugent's call-up is remarkable given he was playing for Bury only two years ago.
The Preston striker has called 16 goals this season, having notched 11 goals during the previous campaign.
England coach McClaren believes Nugent's form for the England Under-21s will enable him cope with international football.
"Internationally you look at the under-21s and if he can score at that level, and he has done," said McClaren.
Barry had been left out of the original party but earned a reprieve after Manchester United's Gary Neville was ruled out because of an ankle injury.
Manchester City defender Micah Richards has an ongoing calf problem.
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and Everton's Phil Neville will also be competing for the left-back slot.
Barry received his first call-up for nearly four years when England played Spain in a friendly in February and played for most of the second half.
However, despite Ashley Cole's suspension for the game against Israel and an injury to fellow left-back Wayne Bridge, the 26-year-old was initially dropped for the games against Israel and Andorra.
The decision was criticised by Villa boss Martin O'Neill.
Richards will join up with the squad on Tuesday and is calf problem will be assessed.
Old Trafford captain Neville picked up an ankle injury against Bolton on Saturday and is set to be sidelined for three weeks.
606: DEBATE Steve McClaren can't afford any more mistakes
Alex K
There was good news for England coach McClaren when Steven Gerrard was given the all-clear, despite limping out of the draw at Aston Villa.
However, the England boss could lose other players to injury after Monday's FA Cup ties, with Manchester United facing Middlesbrough and Tottenham taking on Chelsea.
McClaren confirmed to BBC Five Live Sport ahead of Sunday's Premiership matches that he may have to change his squad because of injury concerns.
He said: "Thirteen players are playing on Monday and the squad could change by Tuesday."
England squad:
Goalkeepers: Robinson (Tottenham), Foster (Man Utd, on loan at Watford), Carson (Liverpool, on loan at Charlton).
Defenders: Richards (Man City), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Terry (Chelsea, capt), Woodgate (Real Madrid, on loan at Middlesbrough), Carragher (Liverpool), A Cole (Chelsea), P Neville (Everton), Barry (Aston Villa).
Midfielders: Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Lampard (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham), Parker (Newcastle), Carrick (Man Utd), Dyer (Newcastle), Downing (Middlesbrough).
Forwards: Johnson (Everton), Rooney (Man Utd), Defoe (Tottenham), Nugent (PNE)
Barry's also in the squad due to the absense of Gary Neville.

-----------------Robinson--------------- Carragher----Ferdinand----Terry----Barry Dyer----Gerrard----Hargreaves----Lennon ----------Rooney------------------------ -----------------------Johnson---------- Based on the squad listed above (given that Richards is injured), what do we make of that? Predictable, I think, but then so were McClaren's selections anyway. Ideally, I'd have Woodgate in instead of Terry, but he's the captain I also think that, unlike Crouch, Johnson is the sort of player Rooney works better with, so we would theoretically see the best of those two too. Robinson's in goal for now, but I'd like to see Foster playing more international friendlies to get experience - he's definitely gonna be #1 in the next couple of years, probably by the world cup. Barry ahead of Ashley Cole? Truth told, I've never been too impressed by AC - when the team's playing well, he ups his game, but when the chips are down, he looks lazy and out of sorts, IMO. Classic example of the prima donnas. Gerrard vs Lampard? Lamps does more than people give him credit for, but I think Gerrard is more of a leader, which we need in midfield. Certainly wouldn't hurt to have him on the bench, at any rate (although you could also argue a strong case for bringing Gerrard on as a later impact player). What do I see McC doing? Robinson Neville/Ferd/Terry/Cole Gerrard/Lamps/Harg/Downing Rooney/Johnson Possibly even another go at 3-5-2 (Rob, Carr/Ferd/Terry, Lennon/Gerr/Harg/Lamps/Down, Roo/John), which would be a disaster waiting to happen Must admit, I'm expecting a draw from this, and given his recent comments, he'd be happy with that - which isn't a good thing!

Neko is right about the motivation, they shouldn't need it, they are doing what they love at the highest possible level, they should be performing better for their country than their club, I know I would! Drop Lampard, I have a massive dislike in him and I couldn't give a toss if he pops up with a vital goal now and again, he does fuck all else and Hargreaves is obviously better than Fat Frank. Play Barry at left back seeing as he is natural, and Carragher at right back like he used to do for Liverpool. Dyer and Lennon on the wings, Downing clearly isn't upto it for England just yet. And we need the win, fuck the draws, we aren't Boro! At this rate, Russia and the Croats will progress

At this rate, Russia and the Croats will progress Glad to see you mostly agree with me I think a lot of people are unfairly harsh on Lamps, in truth. Euro 2000 and WC '02, he was one of our biggest players, whereas Gerrard did bugger-all - and no-one said a word about either. Now that Gerrard's coming to the fore, and Lamps isn't able to live up to the former standards that people seemingly took as normal for him, he's getting a whole heap of shit thrown his way - unfairly, I hasten to add. He's become a player that quietly fills in in the middle of moves, rather than a driving force like Gerrard now is. Against Croatia, he made over 100 passes, and that's without the missed ones - say what you like, but it's not like he doesn't get involved. You don't have to be spectacular to benefit the team. Trouble is, him and Stevie G can't play on the pitch at the same time if they're both in the centre, and Gerrard is a more dominant player. It's natural that he'd get the nod first.
