Ireland name squad for San Marino clash The Republic of Ireland squads for next week's Euro 2008 Group D qualifier against San Marino and the B international friendly against Scotland were announced today in Dublin.
Senior international team manager Stephen Staunton has named a 23 strong squad for Ireland's final game at Lansdowne Road prior to the stadium's redevelopment.
Vice-captain Shay Given, who missed last month's back-to-back fixtures against Cyprus and the Czech Republic because of a stomach injury, returns to the squad as does his Newcastle United colleague Stephen Carr and Manchester City defender Richard Dunne who was suspended for the Czech game.
Five other players who missed the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic - Andy O'Brien (Portsmouth), Aiden McGeady (Celtic), Stephen Ireland (Manchester City), Kevin Doyle (Reading) and Stephen Elliot (Sunderland) also return.
'It is good to have so many of the players who missed the game against the Czech Republic back but the young players who played so well that night have ensured that I will have serious choices to make when it comes to selecting the team,' said Staunton.
Staunton will have a keen interest in the B international friendly against Scotland on the eve of the San Marino game. The B international manager Pat Devlin has named a 21 man squad that includes two players - Cardiff City's Stephen McPhail and Newcastle United's Alan O'Brien - who have won senior caps.
Seventeen of the squad are products of the international under-age system but Lewis Emmanuel (Luton Town), Lee Frecklington (Lincoln City) and Sean St Ledger (Preston North End) have yet to be capped at any level for Ireland.
The B squad includes four players - Kevin Deery (Derry City), Joe Gamble and Roy O'Donovan (Cork City) and Stephen Ward (Bohemians) - from the eircom League.
'There is a lot of potential in this squad and they will have an opportunity next week to show Stephen what they can do,' said Pat Devlin, manager of the squad.
Shelbourne manager Pat Fenlon, and U21 coach Paul Clement will assist Devlin next week along with Cork City goalkeeping coach Phil Harrington and Finn Harps masseur Michael McGlynn.
The match against San Marino on November 15 will be Ireland's final game at Lansdowne Road and Staunton hopes it will be a night to remember.
'This will be a special game for us. I know our fans will generate the same fantastic atmosphere and superb support that they delivered in the last game so it should be a night to remember,' said Staunton.
