THIS IS ENGLAND
Shane Meadows' new project is a semi-autobiographical work that casts an eye over the skinhead culture of the early 1980's, and is a film that cements his reputation as one of the UK's most exciting directing talents.
Having grown up as a skinhead himself, Meadows through his recent press interviews has alluded - with some authority - to what he perceives as an unjust imbalance in how skinheads have come to be regarded in popular culture. This Is England goes some way to redressing the matter, but at the same time doesn't shy away from the more negative aspects that have become synonomous with the scene.
The film tells the story of 12-year old Shaun, a young boy with few friends, and suffering at the hands of bullies in the playground. One day on his walk home, Shaun is befriended by Woody, a local skinhead, who introduces him to his friends, and pitying him, brings him into the group. Woody and his friends are the type of skinhead that the common stereotype forgets; there is a genuine warmth within the friendships, and Milky, a Jamaican skinhead, is probably the closest of Woody's mates. Yes, these lads are no angels; they break into derelict buildings and smash up the fixtures and fittings, they drink and they smoke, but they also have respect for themselves and other people; they are not violent, and they embrace black culture, not abhor it. In fact the camaraderie amongst these friends brought to mind two particular films of the past; Quadrophenia and Stand By Me.
Like Meadows' prior works, the film is laced with many moments of genuine humour, and if anything, Made In England contains more laughs than any previous effort. But also in common with past films, there is an inevitability that matters are going to take a dark twist; and that arrives in the form of Combo.
Fresh out of prison, Combo is a highly respected veteran of the scene and long time friend of Woody, but 3 years of incarceration have changed him as a man, and after dramatically announcing his return at a party, his nationalists leanings soon begin to surface. Suddenly a moment of choice awaits the gang, and while the warm and kind Woody chooses to disassociate himself with Combo, certain members, an entranced Shaun included, choose to stay.
Here Meadows exposes the intolerable side of the culture, as the National Front's influence begins to permeate; Combo takes Shaun to meetings, and plays on the loss of his father in the Falklands to reinforce his beliefs. Although there are still moments of genuine humour and tenderness, and underlying sense of unease runs through the second half of the film, leading ultimately to an inevitable violent confrontation.
The standard of acting from a predominantly amateur cast is terrific, especially from young Thomas Turgoose in the lead role. The characters are fantastically drawn, and wholly believable, while Meadows to his huge credit is able to even illicit sympathy towards the detestable Combo, showing him to be vulnerable, pathetic even, and to have been as susceptible to brainwashing as anyone. He even affords him a moment of at least partial redemption and realisation at the climax. The soundtrack as always with a Meadows film is perfectly compiled; a mixture of early 80's chart hits, Trojan reggae and melancholic piano led instrumentals. The crowning musical moment though lies with a beautiful acoustic cover of The Smiths' 'Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want' which accompanies Shaun in the film's closing scene, a moment of realisation that fittingly recalls the climax of Quadrophenia, a film to which This Is England owes so much.
Very nearly Meadows' best work to date, arguably it is only Paddy Considine's absence this time out, that keeps Dead Man's Shoes top of the pecking order.
9/10

Naw you're not unfunky, I know I have differing to views to some women on some movies, I hate romantic comedies for example, most women love them. It's cool, get funky! I saw Face/Off last week too, if I haven't already mentioned, that was pretty good too.

Perfume
I was totally against it when my girlfriend picked it but despite being a very strange concept, it was extremely watchable.
For anyone interested its set in France about a french guy called Jean-Baptiste Grenouille who was an orphan growing up around parisian fishmarkets. Hes a bit of a deadbeat going nowhere in life but has an amazing sense of smell from where he was brought up. He gets taken in by a failing perfumer who's buisness is slow and they kinda teach eachother new things. Together they help one another create scents that revitalise the perfumer's buisness whilst opening Jean Baptiste's eyes to the world around him. However this is where the problem lies. The resurected Jean-Baptiste decides to go one step too far and create the ultimate fragrance found from beautiful girls hair and skin only. To do this, he feels he has to kill them to collect the scents. As a result, he attempts to go on a killing spree to collect the scents and create this ultimate smell.
The ending is a bit shocking and twisted too, worth a watch i'd say
8/10

Better than you would expect.. To be fair I was expecting a lot of gore and a lot of nastiness from the rightups that I have read, and I was dubious about the 3 quid I would have to shell out to get it on a copy. Not that I would advocate that in anyway and I refuse to confirm if the basis of my review is made from the copy (that may or may not exist) or the pounds I spent at the cinema watching it legally.
But anyway, story revolves around a bunch of people that live outside all the nastiness of invasions and shit from the Persians. Guess it's just a place they have not got to yet but by god they are going to be ready when they do. These fellas teach their kids, by brutality, how to be warriors from a very young age and this is passed on fron generation to generation. The kids grow up hard, their kids grow up hard and fucking nuts until the time comes when Greece (the Persians) are up for taking their land..
The Persian God (he's not a God, just a big fella with a strange taxi that moves around four miles an hour, but it is a convertable) takes exception to the other big fella not giving over his kingdom. By surprise there is only one way in (unless you know the other routes) (which makes it similar to Leicester or Nottingham) (except in Nottingham everyone carries a gun and they weren't allowed in the days of the Spartan) and the Spartan continues to massacre his troops in this gulley..
A lot more goes on after that, but that would give away the ending.. Who goes up? Who goes down?
It's a nail biter, and it's not exclusive to SKY for a change....
Well worth a watch.. 8/10
(and as reply no 666 it has its dark side too...)

Spiderman 3
Spiderman goes all 'Disco Stu' in this messy, messy film. The plot lines are too numerous, and as such too little time is spent developing them or the characters behind them. This leaves a weak and limp film, desperately trying marry things up into a cohesive finale ...... and it fails ...... miserably!! It's a shame really as the first two had merit. However in this film Sam Rami has attempted to cram as many supervillans and storylines into this film, as he possibly could. Ultimately I was left not giving a toss about any of the characters, and wanting the bad film to end quickly!! ............. nice special effect though!!
3/10 .......... purely for the effects!!

I must admit I thought that The Devil's Backbone was a far superior film, and well obviously Pan's Labyrinth too......though that goes without saying.

BLACK BOOK
Paul Verhoeven actually started his directing career helming low-key, serious works. It's a fact that's a little hard to believe from the man who brought us Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Showgirls(!) and Starship Troopers, but Black Book marks his departure from Hollywood, and a return to his Dutch film making roots.
Black Book tells the story of Rachel, a young Dutch Jewish girl who sees her family murdered at the hands of the Nazi's as they try to escape to Belgium. Rescued, she is offered the opportunity to act as a spy for the Dutch Resistance; her task being to befriend a German officer, a relay her findings. The only problem is, she starts to fall for him.
A story of deception, and counter deception, Black Book is a truly engrossing piece, and in the female lead, Carice van Houten, a star is born. Being a Verhoeven movie, there's still plenty of sex and a high body count, but it offers so much more too.
9/10
RE-ANIMATOR
Classic early 1980's video nasty, straight from the 'Evil Dead' school of film making; mediocre special effects, terrible acting, and an even poorer sense of taste.
The re-animator of the title is a medical 'whiz kid' who invents a serum that re-activates the cells in the recently dead, restoring life. After initial mixed success with a cat, the experiments progress regardless until events career out of control and carnage ensues. When a film nears it's climax with the sight of a decapitated professor attempting to perform fellatio on his colleague's daughter, you know you've been royally entertained.
9/10
THE SENTINEL
Michael Douglas' attempt to try an cling on to former glories, as he plays an heroic Secret Service man, framed as a conspirator in an assassination attempt on the President. Keifer Sutherland, in what must have been a huge stretch, plays a government agent, and Eva Longoria, is his new, 'wet behind the ears' assistant.
About a tenth as good as the dullest ever episode of 24. Yawn!!!
3/10
