Just for the record, the odds of winning the lottery are one in 13,983,816. So your odds of getting hit by a meteorite are approximately 1 in 20,000. Given that I know several people who've had near enough misses to consider it a hit - one's had a pebble-sized one zip through their teacup whilst sat in the garden, for instance - it's not so unfeasible. Just pray you don't get hit by something several inches wide, I guess - travelling in tens of metres per second (1m/s = 3.6km/h or 2.2m/h) that could do a lot of damage! Edit: My bad - that should've been tens of km per second Ouch!

Upon visiting other websites, it seems there's great dispute as to what the actual figure is - one site noted that 500 hit Earth on average every year (without counting man-made space debris; I suppose that factors into the figure I'm used to), while another suggests the odds are billions to one.
I suppose it depends exactly which measure you go with - like, do the ones that explode in the atmosphere and come down as thousands of bits count, for instance, or does it have to be the whole meteorite?

Well I imagine that there is alot of stuff floating about up there as space is on the huge side and there is that Astoriod belt between us an Mars, so there must be impacts there so that must cause some stuff to head our way and they could only be the size of say a small car or football I think it is a pretty common thing I imagine alot of it burns up before it hits the ground or hits the seas were its never seen again.

Yeah, I've heard about that one too - makes for quite fascinating discussion when I'm visiting the US and talking to people from the East coast! ;D Again, the whole 'natural doomsday' thing seems so fitting...
