LinkageManchester United have had a £10m bid for midfielder Michael Carrick rejected by Tottenham, BBC Sport can reveal. Spurs dismissed the offer, insisting United would have to double their offer to land the 24-year-old, who is part of the England squad at the World Cup. Manchester United faxed their offer to Tottenham on Friday, but it was swiftly turned down. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants Carrick as a replacement for Roy Keane who left the club last December. Carrick, who has two years left on his contract at White Hart Lane, is likely to be on the substitute's bench for England in their World Cup opener against Paraguay on Saturday. He was born in the north-east and came through the ranks at West Ham and joined Tottenham in 2004 for £2m.

Carrick has settled well at Tottenham, but is not the finished article by a long chalk, being touted as a replacement for Roy Keane must be the ultimate compliment, but his overall game is developing at Tottenham, and I think it is imperative he remains at Tottenham, the club who have invested heavily in his proress and development.

To sell Carrick to Man U would be a major step back for us, especially as we are finally going in the right direction, he is without doubt one of our most important players!!

Given the alternatives - Huddlestone, Ghaly and Zakora - a bid of 20 million might be considered favourably.

Hello SB.
Just saying that 20 million might be worth a look. Carrick is not the ultimate player in the holding role, so for the right money we should look at the options. I don't think United will pay 20 million, but should we refuse such an offer if made? Unlike some of our other players, Carrick has yet to sign a new long-term contract.

Hi JTS I see your point, 20m is alot, and if they did offer that then I think the board would definitely consider accepting it. Don't think MJ would want to sell though, Carrick is probably the first name he puts down on the team sheet every week!!

I have a sneaky feeling that Stalteri was the first name on MJ's team sheet? Something in that. I think Stalteri and Lee started more games than anyone except Robbo and Carrick. What is it with managers and Canadians.
