Has to be a no for me, maybe they'll rise from the ashes - have massive potential and should be in the prem. Lot more worthy than the likes of West Brom and Birmingham

Good fair point Hurlock, to be honest, it does bug me when people insist that their club is a massive club. What actually defines a massive club? The size of the ground, the squad, the fan base or how much money they have bunged to agents etc etc. Luton arent a big club if you look at it any of the ways i have asked, but we have a big bite when it comes to playing these "massive" clubs. Big club, go to my local Labour club, now thats a big club

Agreed mate, this who big club thing is silly - yes you should feel proud of you clubs history and it's achievements.
However right here, right now is what counts.

i believe we are a big club - not in an arrogant or big headed way- but in the sense that we aren't exactly small are we ?
we do have a strong history but that is what it is HISTORY.
we have a huge fanbase and an excellent ground to match - and please no bollox about it never being full. football is the same the world over and fans turn up to watch good players in a winning team - we had neither last season yet still averaged over 30,000.
in the early 80's manu were getting 20 odd thousands at matches and arsenals crowds were in their teens.
and he was right - the mags did have crowds sub. 10k
and jj was right - the boat is shit

So.... are Sunderland a big club?
Compared to Torquay United or Crewe Alexandra? Yes. Massive.
Compared to Liverpool or Arsenal? No. Not really.
Compared to Real Madrid or Manchester Utd? Who? Sunderwhat, now?

I think the whole big club debate is pathetic to be honest. As ourselves (minnows in the European Cup), Wimbledon, Wigan, Oxford, Reading and now Colchester have proved down the years it's what you do on the pitch that matters
That said, I think Sunderland do have a proud heritage despite recent embarrassments in the top flight, and they have a decent sized loyal fanbase, certainly more substansial than certain other clubs. They probably define the yo yo club phenomenon, but I think that once they can get back up they will be better placed to stay there under the new regime.
