Looks very snowy, when did you go Arnie? Went for a month and got back a week ago wednesday. It is winter over there and they have just come out of the biggest snow storm for 200 years or something.

Yeah I'm planing to go there for about a month, but I'd go in their summer.
How did you manage to go for a month, where did you stay, did you travel or just stay in one or two areas? How did you get time off work? How much did it cost you?

How did you get time off work? How much did it cost you? I have wanted to go there for years and my job sucked so I just jacked it in ;D I did a hell of a lot of research and I ended up on a tour bus with www.straytravel.co.nz/index.php. There is another bus called The Kiwi experience and, if according to your bio you are going to be 20 next year it may suit you better. The Stray bus is much better if you want to go 'out of the way' which is what New Zealand is all about. Get the Maxi or Moe pass and if you are dubious about going on a bus dont. There is no public transport and I had the time of my life. The bus will sort out accomodation on the way and will book the hostels for you. The driver stays with you (unless you get off and get on a bus behind which you may well want to do) and when you need to cook communally he will get all the food.

The Kiwi bus mainly stays in the towns but you may prefer. It is known in New Zealand as the 'big green fuck truck' as they are green (obvious) and the amount of action that goes on.
Stray generally has slightly older people (like myself at 30) but we had some younger people on the bus as well. It is just for people that are a bit more independant who want to see the 'real' New Zealand.

OK thanks, yeah I dodn't think I'll go for a year or so. I was thinking about hireing a car so I can drive to where ever I want and spend as much time there as possible. I enjoy the freedom to that rather than following the restirctions of an organised bus trip. You say you jacked you're job, but what about after, what now that you've got back? Are you finding a new job with no current income?

Are you finding a new job with no current income? Trust me matey you do not want to hire a car if you are going alone. Not that the roads are bad but you will miss all the scenery and believe me it is awesome. The Stray bus is very relaxed and they guarantee places at hostels when you will struggle yourself. Everyone I spoke to who hired a car regretted it and wished they got on the bus. New job coming up I think I have managed to get the same kind of job as before with a £15,000.00 pay rise

But I'm an amateur photographer, looking to turn professional, and won't miss the scenery because I'd be constantly stopping to photograph and explore it. Why did the people you spoke to regert hireing a car? It seems like the only way for me, and I may not be going on my own.

Well most said it was too much hassle driving because you will be doing a hell of a lot. Some enjoyed it but the general feeling I got was that the buses are better. The buses also take you to places you would not think of going to and they are allowed to places you will not be in a car. Either way mate you will love the place. If I got the opportunity I would live there no questions. Another idea is to look on the bus website and get an idea of their routes and use them as a guide for when you drive. They pretty much go to all the best places. Places you have to visit - North Island - Hahei, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach Surfing in Raglan Caving in Waitomo Rotarua (thermal geysers) Taupo (cheapest skydiving in the world ) Walking the Tongaririo crossing in Whakapapa Wellington South Island - Kaikoura (for the whale watching Abel Tasman Barrytown Haast Queenstown (best place on earth!) Milford Sound

Took this pic of my dog a few years ago, and it's still my favourite one of him ;D No specialist equipment - just a basic £20 camera on the patio at night
