(Excuse the terrible tabloid topic title... and that little alliteration...)
I've started a new topic for this because I don't want to keep putting outward rumours in the Rumour Mill, but this one seems to be on the verge of developing into something.
Reports last week suggested that having sold top scorer Andy Gray to Charlton, Burnley boss Owen Coyle was looking to bring Alan Lee back to Turf Moor as a replacement, possibly for around £900,000. Sheepshanks has denied any contact with with the Clarets or any knowledge of the Lancashire club having expressed an interest, and Lee himself is said to be happy with life in Suffolk. However, reports have surfaced today claiming that Magilton is quite happy to let Lee go if Burnley send a sizeable offer his way.
To be honest, I'm really hoping that this is all just typical January transfer window speculation. Certainly it wouldn't be the first time with Lee, what with talk about him being kicked out following the Amsterdam incident and speculation that he was on his way to Hull in the summer of 2007. £900,000 though sounds like the kind of amount that we would probably accept, even if we don't need to sell, just to make a profit on the £100,000 Joe Royle spent bringing Lee to Portman Road.
I don't fundamentally understand why the hell we should even consider selling Lee though. Granted, his form is patchy, but then again it always has been. He has spells where he suddenly scores 4 goals in about 5 games. Heck, Darren Bent used to have similar spells, and it was only because Kuqi used to make up for Bent's goal droughts that we ever pushed for promotion back in 2003-05. Just because Counago and Walters are whacking in double-figures, doesn't mean we should let go of someone who has had 9 goals this season and, in total, has scored 28 in his two years at Portman Road (notwithstanding him having a significant spell out with injury in 2006). Yes, £900,000 is a tidy profit, but I thought with the Marcus Evans takeover that we wouldn't be so bloody concerned with squeezing a few pennies out of our best players. I've spoken to my bro filbert85 about this and he suggests that maybe the talk of how much money we've got to spend is actually all bollocks. While I can be certain that we have got money to spend in the knowledge we're bidding over £1.5m for David Norris, I can't help but feel there might be some truth in his suggestions when it's difficult to think of any further rationale for selling Lee.
There's my 900,000 pounds-eth, anyway. Hopefully it'll all turn out to be rubbish this week but, knowing our recent record for selling decent strikers, I'm not very confident at this point.
Let us know what you think in the poll.
