Ipswich 1-0 Chester
Matt Richards' late strike ended Chester's brave resistance and put Ipswich into the FA Cup fourth round.
Town midfielder Gary Roberts hit the bar with a free-kick after Alan Lee had been fouled on the edge of the area.
Gregg Blundell and Jon Walters were causing the home defence plenty of problems but it was still Ipswich who created most of the chances.
Chester clung on until six minutes from time when substitute Richards curled home a shot from the edge of the box.
The visitors only reached the third round after being reinstated following their defeat by Bury because the Shakers fielded an ineligible player - and after holding Town in the first game they were not going to go out without a fight.
They got the ball in the Ipswich net on two occasions but Blundell saw his strike ruled out for an infringement on the edge of the box early on while their second effort was chalked off for a Walters foul on keeper Lewis Price.
But apart from a spell in the second half, Ipswich were on top, with Danny Haynes wasting a couple of good opportunites and Jaime Peters going close.
Roberts thought he had broken the deadlock when he hit the woodwork but Ipswich were able to breathe a sigh of relief when Richards scored to set up a home tie with Swansea in the fourth round.

Ipswich manager Jim Magilton:
"The only thing that really mattered was the result. Had we lost it would have been devastating.
"We lacked zip in our play but credit to Chester who played very well and got men behind the ball."
Chester manager Mark Wright:
"Ipswich are a great side and I was more than proud of my players. We have been playing well for a while now and not getting our just rewards.
"I don't think we were ever comfortable but my boys gave a solid performance.
"They dug in and this was somewhere for them to come and enjoy because our bread and butter is in the league."
