There are two things to aim at in life: first to get what you want; and after that, to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second. The first aim is very selfish. The second you'd have to be stupid not to achieve... *Disclaimer - Personal view* It's my capitalist upbringing! ;D

It is I that looks down my nose at you, the trade union loving, yogurt knitting leftie! You'd sail this nation down the river given half the chance and dilute it's history and traditions.

That had the ring of truth about it!!! what is "yoghurt knitting" Oh and seeing as I got things the wrong way round, do excuse me a moment... <smacks Cav in the chops!> ;D Don't you mean "sell" And no I wouldn't! I'm very interested in heritage as a matter of fact. But if you ever want to discuss this properly I'm ready and waiting. No actual violence though, that'd be a bad plan...

I live in a swanky flat because I am a lucky boy. The fact that I have been massively privileged in my life doesn't make me think it is right that some should be massively under-privileged. To be honest, I came to "Trendy London" because most of my friends from Uni were working here. That social side of things was important to me. My job doesn't pay *that* well compared to private sector salaries for someone of my skills and experience, however I work in the public sector because I have a genuine commitment to public service and making this part of the world a better place (as far as possible) ***that'll be a block then! have you not had a convo like this with Laura? She's got good politics I believe... ***

Yep I've put Laura in her place many a time! So free market economy principles are fine, and so is the right for any individual to better him/herself to the point of great wealth. Do you agree with that?

Do you agree with that? LOL you always have to make it sound dirty eh?! ;D Ohhh... remind me you *studied* politics didn't you?! To be honest, I find "great wealth" offensive - but I tend to explain that in emotive rather than rational terms. So no I suppose at base I would rather see the economy run differently. Before you call me a Commie I don't mean a planned economy... however I don't quite know enough about economics to explain fully...

To quote "Brassed Off" "So God was creating man. And his little assistant came up to him and he said: "Hey, we've got all these bodies left, but we're right out of brains, we're right out of hearts and we're right out of vocal chords." And God said: "Fuck it! Sew 'em up anyway. Smack smiles on the faces and make them talk out of their arses." And lo, God created the Tory Party." unsophisticated political abuse at it's best!!!

Some good William Morris quotes:
“I hope that we shall have leisure from war, -- war commercial, as well as war of the bullet and the bayonet; leisure from the knowledge that darkens counsel; leisure above all from the greed of money, and the craving for that overwhelming distinction that money now brings: I believe that, as we have even now partly achieved liberty , so we shall achieve equality , and best of all, fraternity , and so have leisure from poverty and all its griping, sordid cares.”
"I have attempted to read the works of Marx, but much of it appears to be dreary rubbish. I am, I hope, a socialist nonetheless! It is enough political economy for me to know that the rich are rich and the poor are poor, and the rich are rich because they exploit the poor."

Why do socialists assume that the rich are rich coz they exploit the poor?? Many rich people are rich because they exploit the rich social class they operate in. My view is this. We all have the ability in a society such as Britain to better ourselves. Those who take this opportunity can flourish whether they are working, middle or upper class. There will always be poor people some who don't deserve it and some who do, for what ever reason. However it is not fair to restrict those who aspire to do well in life and the facts are that human nature is to move forward. I am an ambitious person and whether it's nice or not, I will succeed and enjoy the fruits of my labour..................and my conscience will be clear! I thank you!

Why do socialists assume that the rich are rich coz they exploit the poor?? Many rich people are rich because they exploit the rich social class they operate in. Okay there are some whose wealth does not come solely from treading on the heads of other people... but I would not like to speculate about percentages, I also just find it obscene that some people can claim the wages they do, and base that on "the market" - an untameable beast? A reasonable view in a way but simply untrue. Not everyone has the same opportunities, and that is a fact. The disparity of opportunity is something which bothers me, fair play if it doesn't bother you. Okay, you're willing for some people to fail through no fault of their own. Social Darwinism Cav? Hell take the hindmost? Not my bag. Don't start making arguments from nature because it the whole point of human progress is to go beyond the limits of our animalistic nature... broadly speaking. Nothing wrong with ambition, where well directed. Yes but I would like everyone to enjoy the full fruits of their labour - ironically a part of the old Labour Party Clause Four!!! I didn't say "how can you sleep at night" you're not exactly on the "top 10 evil capitalists" list are you now?! have a good weekend Don Cavallero... seeya soon I'm off!
