Blackwell frustrated by PNE defeat
Kevin Blackwell admitted his frustration after Sheffield United's run of four straight wins came to an end with a 3-1 defeat at Preston.
But Blackwell's emotions in the aftermath of defeat at Deepdale had more to do with some of the decisions that went against his men.
The Blades conceded an early penalty and although they threatened to equalise in a frantic finish, they lost Chris Morgan to a late sending-off.
Blackwell said: "We gave it everything. It's just frustrating and disappointing that we didn't get anything.
"I thought that whoever played at home today got the decisions that mattered. I wish we had been playing at home.
"There were a number of decisions where we didn't know what was going on. If I say too much about the ref and officials, you get fined.
"It was a great game - it was blood and thunder. We just could not nick that goal in the end and we were disappointed with the goals we let in.
"The lads gave me everything they have got. That's all that I can ask for as a manager.
"It was a big game between two in-form sides. I felt both sides gave it a good go."
He admitted his side was disappointed at the way that their winning streak had come to a halt and he called the sending-off of Morgan as "nonsense".
Blackwell added: "When you lose you have to get back on that road again and win."
Preston secured three valuable points thanks to a brace from former Liverpool player Neil Mellor and a penalty from Callum Davidson. Sub James Beattie grabbed a consolation penalty late on and in a nail-biting finale also went agonisingly close to equalising at one point.
Delighted Preston manager Alan Irvine is glad that his side have now made it five wins from their last six matches. But he is not resting on his laurels yet as far as Championship safety is concerned.
"I have told the lads that with five games to go 54 points is not enough. I have not yet set a new target. We will get the 54 first, then I can do that.
"Obviously it is fantastic. I am not counting my chickens because obviously we are nearly there.
"If they get to 54 points it would be a natural reaction to slump back, relax and think 'job done'. It would be job done, but you don't want the season to peter out.
"The lads have done brilliantly since January and we want to keep that going. We don't want to finish the season on a downward spiral, but to finish off well."
Irvine had a special word of praise for Mellor who had grabbed four goals in the last two reserve games prior to his double over United.
"He is a really good finisher. He didn't believe he could play for 90 minutes at the intensity that's required at this level. I spoke to him about a month ago and said that was something that was in his mind, rather than to do with his physical capabilities.
"Today must have given him a massive amount of confidence."
