I love the internet. Grant people anonymity, and you see people for what they really are. People are cold, uncaring, judgemental, self-righteous, self-obsessed, cynical, hopeless and heartless. You look through any website where people can hide their identity, and you see exactly the same thing.
But you know what? Every time I dig through this cesspit that humanity apparently wallows in, I see one common trait. No matter what the other circumstances are, there are two things that stay alive far longer than everything else - times when people are laughing together, and times when people are crying together.
You know what else? I think those two things are linked. Life is cruel, and unkind, and unfair. Happiness is all we really want, and it seems like such a small thing to ask, but it's probably the single most elusive thing we can seek. I can't blame people for becoming bitter and cynical and snide, when I consider everything we all go through.
Despite this, anything that focusses on these harsh, bitter feelings, where people lash out at anyone and anything, just fades away. I think that's because, deep down, that's not what we want. We don't ~want~ to be hateful.
Instead, what really stands the test of time is when we help each other. Laughing together gives us a taste of that elusive happiness, however briefly - it's that little reminder that things could be worse, or could be better, but there are ways to deal with it. Crying together lets us know we're not alone, and helps heal us just a little bit.
Give people anonymity, and at the end of it all, for all the rage and hate and bile, we come together and help each other. Let people be themselves without fear of retribution, and that's what you get.
Like I said, I love the internet. It shows me what people are really like
