Wolves have signed Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne on loan until December 29.
The 20-year-old England under-21 international is available for tomorrow’s Molineux clash against Swansea.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy said: “We wanted some defensive cover, because we wanted to stop conceding goals at the rate we have - 14 in five games isn’t good enough.
“Michael is a good defender and very quick. He is travelling up today and could be in the squad tomorrow.
“But I wouldn’t want to throw him in without doing some work with him first.”
Mancienne knows all about the Championship, having played over 50 times on loan for QPR in the last two seasons. The young Chelsea defender arrives at a time when Jody Craddock is back in training while Richard Stearman is available after suspension.
McCarthy said: “Jody isn’t ready yet and may not be for a few weeks.”
One player who has had his hopes of a loan move scuppered is Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray, who has missed out on a loan deal to Milton Keynes Dons, because current No 1 Carl Ikeme has a slight back problem.
Murray was going to join the League One club to cover a three match ban to Willy Gueret, but Ikeme’s injury means the luckless 27-year-old will have to wait for a taste of first-team action.

I have seen him play for the u21's a few times, looks very good. Just what we need, alongside Stearman, Foley and Ward.

Thats a very good signing. I rate Mancienne very highly. Another I thought we should have gone for on loan at Watford. But seeing as we have no money (where has it all gone ?) was a pipe dream. Ward says he would like to stay longer at Watford , even hinting at a permanent move. Come home Dazza.

Hadn't realised that Stears and Mancienne were good friends and had played together so many times. They have played alongside each other at England u16,17,18 + 19's, and then obviously in the u21 squad together. So already a known partnership. I wonder if that will influence him to move away from Chelski

Rumours abound that Mancienne will be in Capello's squad this week rather than the U21'S. Big step up if it's true.

.... his call up falls into the same bracket as David Nugent's.... so many players more deserving, all over looked for a player yet to prove himself

Ridiculous to call his lad up - hardly made a career for himself yet, been on loan in the CCC for the last few seasons and the odd game for the U21's and now this?
Madness!

Mancienne is quality.
There are plenty of other defenders Capello could have called up... players like Mathew Upson, Anton Ferdinand etc, but lets be honest... they are never going to be England regulars and aren't international quality.
I think Capello has made a smart move in calling up Mancienne, as he is young and has bags of potential (he's not on Chelsea's books for nothing). Giving him the experience of being in the squad will only be good for his future and I guarantee that if England nurture and give him chances here and there over the next two years, he'll be better than really average defenders like Anton Ferdinand, Mathew Upson etc.
Too many times in the past we've opted for including players in the squad that will never have a chance of being an England XI regular, so let's see if we can develop someone like Mancienne in starting XI player (in a few years) rather than not having him and selecting average defenders like Upson/Ferdinand (sorry to keep using the same example, but It fits well IMO)
So in short, well done Capello for having the balls to call up Mancienne, instead of an average alternative who will bench warm (I know Mancienne will most likely sit on the bench, but the experience will be more beneficial to him, than say Upson).

*controversial point to put on the Wolves board*
I've seen Everton play on the tv quite a few times this season and Jagielka has clearly been Everton's best defender all season. In most of the games the commentator have been waxing lyrical about him and today (sunday) it was his defending that prevented Everton from losing, yet Lescott AND Mancienne get picked ahead of him.... thats a joke!
.... also i don't have enough fingers to count the number of Under 21 international with "bags of potential" who've gone on to do nowt, because they were just overhyped!
incidently Upson is also in the squad.

Moyes bemused by Jagielka snub
Everton manager David Moyes has questioned why defender Phil Jagielka has been overlooked again by England coach Fabio Capello.
Centre-back Jagielka, 26, has impressed for the Toffees this campaign and has started all of the club's 13 Premier League games.
However, he was not named in Capello's 23-man squad to face Germany on Wednesday, with defender Michael Mancienne, who has yet to make a top-flight appearance, a surprise selection.
Moyes said in The Sun: "Put it this way, he's playing as well if not better than he was last season, when he was included in the England squad.
"It's hard enough picking my own team without trying to tell someone else what to do but Jags has been playing as well as I have seen him.
"He has been our most consistent player this season and his pace, athleticism and strength have been impressive.
"Maybe if he keeps that up he will get in again."

I agree with Rich. Walcott got an early call up and it didn't do him no harm. Mancienne would be playing regular first team football had he been at any other prem club apart from the 'big' four. Rated very highly by Jose Mourinho and has been followed very closely for a few years now by the England coaching staff. Its not a real suprise for those who seen him play live.

Wolves players have backed Michael Mancienne to be thrown straight in for his England debut against Germany in Berlin on Wednesday.
Mancienne’s shock call-up by Fabio Capello for the friendly is largely believed to be to give the 20-year-old a taste of the international set-up.
Now the players, who have watched the on-loan Chelsea defender at first hand since his arrival on loan at Molineux, believe he should be handed his chance now.
Carlos Edwards, who set up both goals in Wolves’ 2-1 win at Southampton on Saturday, led the call.
He said: “Fabio Capello should have a look at him because he’s England class. I rate him as one of the best young centre halves of his generation and I can see big things happening for him in the future.
“I can see him in a full England shirt and hopefully playing in Europe. I rate him very highly – he’s come here not just to prove a point but to get games under his belt and he’s proved he’s one for the future.”
Defensive partner Richard Stearman added Mancienne’s call-up had not surprised him.
He said: “He’s certainly worthy of it. Mike told me on Friday that he was on standby for the squad and I was delighted for him.
“I knew myself previously how good he was so it’s not that great a surprise to me. I don’t think there’s a limit to how good he can become.
“He came here looking for games and he’s proving how much of a good player he is. But it’s good for the rest of the under-21s to see if you’re playing well Mr Capello will give you a chance.
“Hopefully he gets the chance to play because it wouldn’t just be great for Mike, but for Wolves as well.”
Striker Chris Iwelumo, who is with the Scotland squad to play Argentina, thinks Mancienne will do just fine.
He said: “I think he can definitely play for England. He’s got a lot of quality and he’s going into a great squad.”
While Mancienne has won his first call-up as one of five centre-halves in a squad also featuring ex-Wolves man Joleon Lescott and Joe Hart.
Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney have pulled out due to injury, while John Terry and Steven Gerrard are doubts.
Terry said: “His form has been fantastic for Wolves. They’ve had three or four wins since he has been there and he has a bright future.”
